BBC Doctor Who Festival – Hag & Con chat with Michelle Gomez & Ingrid Oliver

Tea or Coffee and why? Con age 8

Michelle Gomez – Coffee, because I like the bean.

Ingrid Oliver – Coffee also because it wakes me up in the morning. I drink about five cups. Actually I haven’t had enough this morning.

Where were you when you found out you were going to be in Doctor Who and who was the first person you called? Hag age 11

Michelle Gomez – I was offered another part in the series but couldn’t do it. Because I couldn’t physically get there and I don’t have a Tardis. I was absolutely devastated because this was gonna be my one and only chance to work on Doctor Who. So I wrote Steven (Moffat) a very grovelling letter apologising that I just couldn’t be in two places at the same time. And then I said if he ever needed a vet high cheek bones blue eyed villainess in the future – I’m your man, not thinking anything about being the Master or anything. And then didn’t hear anything and though ‘Oh well – Never Mind’. And then a few weeks later got a call saying ‘Michelle’ – it was from Sarah, my Agent. And she said sit down. What I ‘Sit down’ and I said ‘What is it?’ And she said ‘How do you feel about playing the Master?’. And I was like ‘Whaaaaaattt???!!!!’. And I said ‘I fell like this -Aaahhhh!!!!’.

I couldn’t tell anybody. I could only tell my husband. So I just wandered about with this strange enigmatic smile for months on end. I was very grateful.

Ingrid Oliver – My boyfriend. No, my Mum. I was walking around Richmond just outside London. I found out, hung up the phone and I walked around for about an hour without registering where I was. And then thought ‘Oh my God’.

If you could go back in time – where would you go and why would you go there? Con age 8

Michelle Gomez – I would probably go back to when I was maybe eight years old. And my twin brother and I would sit with my twin brother hiding behind the couch watching Doctor Who. We were both obsessed with it. It makes me teary thinking about it. I really want it back as its still really vivid in my memory and it was very magical. He was a boy and was a girl and we shared the same thing and then my older brother would come in who’s a boy because he’s a brother. And then my other brother would come in – also a boy, and then before you know it there’s four kids there, but all of different ages. Because we were really spaced out. It’s all the things we did together. The nostalgia of it is still very alive.

Ingrid Oliver – I would like to go back…..I used to live in Rome for a year. I speak fluent Italian. I used to walk around the streets and see all the ruins. I would like to see when it was all properly there. And Togas are forgiving – it’s just a sheet. And they had exquisite jewellery.

Out of all the Doctors of all time who do you think had the best costume and why? Hag age 11

Michelle Gomez – I like this one. My Doctor.

I could tell you something really behind the scenes. When we were doing a rehearsal with Davros we don’t rehearse in the entire costume. So sometimes we’ll be a little more comfortable till we have to get completely buttoned up. And Davros was rehearsing…..so he was sitting there in this half Dalek and he had an old man’s dressing gown on. You know a stripy dressing gown. And I thought it was genius. And I went up to the costume designers and say – ‘That’s absolutely genius!’, I can’t believe you have done that. What a brilliant surprise. And he was like ‘You’re an idiot’ (Laughs).

So that would have been my most favourite costume. Davros sitting in an old man’s bath chair wearing a dressing gown. Marks and Spencer’s Dressing gown.

Ingrid Oliver – I actually like the War Doctors outfit. John Hurts costume. It was all kind of camouflaged shabby Chic. He looked great in it too – very foxy.
