Dolphin Tale: Hag and Caitlin talk to the real Winter’s trainer Abbey Stone

· Was the Winter in the film the real Winter? (Caitlin)

Dolphin Tale is based on Winter’s actual life story and Winter did play herself in the majority of the movie. When it was not appropriate to have Winter in the scene, such as the beach scene, an animatronic dolphin was used. Some scenes were also CGI (computer-generated imagery)

· Does Winter like being a film star? (Hag)

Winter does not grasp the concept of being a “star” or comprehend the impact she has had on millions of people around the world. With that said, Winter does respond well to filming; she enjoys the attention, the new experiences, and has many positive associations with the filming process.

· Did you spend a long time each day with Winter? (Caitlin)

Trainers begin interactions with Winter before sunrise and continue them throughout the day into late evening. In total, we spend upwards of 6 hours of face time each day playing, teaching, and strengthening our relationship with her.

· Does Winter know the kids are like her? (Hag)

It difficult to say what Winter does and does not understand but based on her observable behavior I can say that yes, Winter has responded more positively to and seemed to be more comfortable around certain individuals.

· Did you become friends? (Caitlin)

Yes, Winter and I have a very close relationship. I am her friend, her “mom,” her trainer, her caregiver.

· Is Sawyer actually Winter’s best friend? (Hag)

Sawyer is a fictional character in the movie but he does represent a group of individuals who were part of Winter’s story.

· Does Winter have any Dolphin friends? (Caitlin)

Winter has an adopted “mom” is who is an older female dolphin named Panama. Winter and Panama are good friends.

· Were you sad to leave? (Caitlin)

I am not sure I understand this question. I have been working with Winter since her arrival at Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

· Did Winter enjoy being able to swim again? (Hag)

Winter responds well to her prosthetic tail and uses it daily.
