Trollhunters Defenders of Arcadia – Con talks Guillermo del Toro and telling a new Trollhunter story with Game Developer & Art Director Rob Buchanan!!!

Tea or coffee and why? (Con age 13)

Rob Buchanan – Coffee definitely. I love my morning coffee, It eases me into the day and helps me feel alert. I’ve also never really enjoyed the taste of tea that much!

What was the best thing about working with Guillermo del Toro? (Con age 13)

Rob Buchanan – Guillermo del Toro is an extremely well established filmmaker, producing the Emmy Award winning Netflix trilogy series Tales of Arcadia and producing Academy Award® winning fantasy films Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) and The Shape of Water (2017).

The best thing about working with Guillermo was turning his brilliant fantasy, Tales of Arcadia universe into a brand-new action-adventure platform game that allows fans to continue to enjoy the world that they are so passionate about in an immersive way.

If you were in the ‘Arcadia Universe’ what would be the scariest element and does it appear in the Trollhunters game? (Con age 13)

Rob Buchanan – I think it goes without saying that some of the trolls in the TV series are quite scary and in Trollhunters, Defenders of Arcadia, players can expect to encounter numerous major villains including Gunmar the Black, Angor Rot and Morgana le Fay, who all pose unique challenges.

Arguably one of the scariest trolls in the Arcadia Universe is the extremely mischievous Porgon the Trickster, who is notorious for causing mayhem wherever he goes. He initially appeared in the second of the three series 3Below, where he combined his magic with Akiridion technology to create a time loop that rests events to the beginning of the day, something Porgon used every time he felt threatened.

He’s the focal villain of the game and it’s down to the Trollhunters team of Jim Lake Jr, Toby, Merlin and Claire to stop him and the time-pocalypse – the main storyline of the game.

Is there anything in the game that changes what we know from the story seen in the show? (Con age 13)

Rob BuchananDreamWorks Trollhunters Defenders of Arcadia is inspired by the hit Dreamworks Animation and Netflix Emmy-winning series, but tells a brand-new story that takes place in between the distinct worlds from the three series. So, the game doesn’t change the show’s story but instead, acts as a brand new key narrative beat that unifies the series trilogy.

In the game, players have the opportunity to play as the fan favourite character Jim Lake Jr.,  as they adventure through the game’s unique worlds, level up armor, gain new abilities and attempt to become the hero of Arcadia.

What did you enjoy most about developing the Trollhunters game and what do you think is the most exciting level? (Con age 13)

Rob Buchanan – One of the most enjoyable parts about developing the Trollhunters game was utilising the TV series actors to be in the game itself. The actors, including Emile Hirsch as Jim Lake Jr, David Bradley as Merlin, Charlie Saxton as Toby and Lexi Medrano as Claire, recorded content specifically for the game, bringing fans even closer to the show’s main characters.

In terms of which level is the most exciting, that’s a tough question! But, almost all levels in the game are taken from places from the TV series itself. As you can imagine, we had a lot of fun taking some of the Tales of Arcadia world and creating our own versions of them in the game itself.
