For the record as a 36 year old man I loved this film and going to go as far as to say this is probably one of my favourite films of 2011.
That said (and I hate to pick on the BBFC again as they have such a tough job in keeping everyone happy), this film was a 12A at the cinema and it would be completely inappropriate to show Cowboys and Aliens to anyone under the age of 12 years old. It might even be a little inappropriate for some kidz over 12(I feel the same way about The Dark Knight). Its very scary, very violent and touches on subject matter I feel is too sensitive to come up for the first time with youngsters in an fun Sci-fi movie – like the career choice of one of the female characters.
I personally feel its time for a change in the grading system as clearly its becoming harder for the BBFC to class within the system available to them, Maybe the new system should be: E, U, PG, PG13, 15A, 18 – and this grading system should be the same on Home Entertainment as well as at the cinema so parent don’t get confused.
