How to Train Your Dragon 2 – The Kidz talk to Director Dean Deblois & Producer Bonnie Arnold

What’s your favourite film you’ve ever made and why? Con age 7

Dean Deblois – Wow…that is a difficult one. I would say…..I would say this one. I would say How to Train Your Dragon 2 is my favourite film that I’ve made because it’s the first time I’ve had a chance to write and Direct my myself. So it most closely reflects my own tastes.

Although we love a bit of Stitch though don’t we?

Yeah we love Stitch.

I’m very proud of all of them so I find that a very difficult question. Bit I think this pot ocular film gave me a chance to really explore my own tastes. Every other film I’ve Directed was with Chris Sanders so it was a combination of our sensibilities.

Bonnie Arnold – Oh my Gosh….I feel I’ve been very fortunate to be part of a lot of fun films actually. All of them were different.

But I have to say my favourite one was How to Train Your Dragon 2. I feel like I have a lot of creative input into the film. And that means a lot to me. I was a partner to the Director/Writer Dean DeBlois and I also see how the film effects people who see the film. That means a lot to me. It’s all different – different times in your life – but right now in this moment I feel a lot of pride in the film and I enjoy watching it over and over again. And I enjoy it for different reasons each time I watch it. The way the characters look and perform to the music. It gives me a lot of pleasure.

Toy story aside – we love Tarzan.

Thank you. Do you know what – I’ve watched Tarzan not that long ago and it holds up amazingly well.

That films celebrating this year it’s 15th anniversary of the release of Tarzan. I’m still friendly with some of the people that worked on it.

I get people to this day who come up to me and say – ‘we’ve adopted a child’ or something and you know what that movie has a lot to say about families and the perfect makeup of families. It makes me feel nice.

I love Tarzan – but they all have a special place in my heart.

If you was a dragon what element/powers would you have? Hag age 10

Dean Deblois – Well I’ve always loved the ability to turn invisible. So I think if I was a Dragon I would love to be a ‘Stealthy Dragon’. And a very agile Dragon one that could canal age against any environment. Or have the ability to genuinely go invisible.

Bonnie Arnold – The one I would say – but I think it’s a little scary to have as a power is…..I wonder if a Dragon could have the power to see into the future?

But that might be too scary. It’s probably better to just live in the present. Wouldn’t that be interesting?

I don’t know why that came to me – but maybe to see into the future.

Have you seen a pink Dragon that would cuddle me? Bex age 3

Dean Deblois – (Laughs) That’s very sweet. I have in fact. There’s a version of a Groncall that was done as a stuffed toy for the Dragon arena show. It was big and pink, fluffy and I think it would be a great cuddly pal.

Bonnie Arnold – I think there’s a version of the Groncall that Fishlegs has that’s Pink. So I think that’s your best bet. Definitely it could keep you warm in bed if it didn’t kick you out of bed.

The Groncalls are a little bit big.

If you had a dragon – what would you call it and why? Hag age 10

Dean Deblois – I think I would call my Dragon Bone crusher. I think it’s a nice tough name for a large Dragon. It would have to be a large Dragon to fly me around because I’m a large person. So I think a big tough rock textured dragon called ‘Bone Crusher’.

Bonnie Arnold – Oh my gosh that’s hard. I have to say the Dragon I like the best is Astros Dragon – Stormfly.

If I could choose to fly one of the Dragons that’s part of the movie I think I’d choose Stormfly. And I love her name. And in love Astra too….I feel a special….I named Astra actually. She wasn’t a part of the original team of Hiccups in the book and we felt that we needed a girl character and we came up with Astra. I thought thought that was a great kind of Viking name. I have a special affinity with Astra and Stormfly so I think I like that one the best.

What do you think is the biggest threat to any Dragon? Con age 7

Dean Deblois – I think the biggest threat to any Dragon is human that want to abuse them – like Drago.

Like most animals they’re tough on the exterior but also quite vulnerable.

Drago is the type of character who wants to force everything to do his bidding. So I think like most animals in the world – I think the biggest threat are humans that don’t expect nature.

Bonnie Arnold – I guess the biggest threat to any dragon is people who don’t understand them like Drago. He kind of uses force to tame them – but I like Hiccups method better. I think friendship and kindness are the way to communicate with animals. And dragons are very special animals.

Can I watch How to train your Dragon 3 this Christmas please? Talia age 5

Dean Deblois – (Laughs) I wish I could entertain that request. Sadly animated movies take three years to make, so we’re just getting started and it’s gonna take a little while. Please have some patience.

2017 I hear?

Yes!!

Bonnie Arnold – Oh my Gosh….she can’t wait. (Laughs)

Unfortunately I have to disappoint her. I don’t think we’re gonna be able to have it done by this Christmas. But we’re defiantly working on it and we’re hoping it will be as special as the first Dragon and as Dragon 2. And I promise her we will make it as quickly as we can but we won’t make for this Christmas.

She will just have to be satisfied with watching the DVD of Dragon 2 and there’s some special treats on the DVD I think she will enjoy.

There’s a special Dragon racing short that we did. There’s commentary by the film makers talking about how they made the film. So hopefully she’ll get the DVD for Christmas and that will have to hold her for just a little bit.

Does Hiccups Dad come back into How to Train your Dragon 3 OB1 style? Hag age 10

Dean Deblois – Interesting. Well – that’s an interesting notion. And I do have something planned that’s not quite that – not quite OB1. But…..I think we will see a little bit more of Stowak in the story. In the way that there might be moment revisited. Where Hiccups trying to figure out what to do and he remembers times with his father that gives him some guidance.

But if he ends up being a ghost like OB1 it’ll be because Hag mentioned it yeah?

Dean Deblois – Yes! (Laughs) Yes!!!
